a journey of the senses by FLACONNEUR
Just who is Thierry Wasser? He is definitely no dilettante when it comes to the world of perfume. He was appointed the in-house perfumer of Guerlain in June 2008 replacing Jean-Paul Guerlain who retired in 2002. Guerlain has done without an in-house “nose” and has substituted by working with Maurice Roucel and Béatrice Piquet. Wasser previously worked under the fragrance firms of Fimenich and Givaudan. Previous to Wasser’s appointment, all Guerlain creations were conceived by a master perfumer from within the family. Wasser is the first person to fill the position of perfumer that is outside the Guerlain family.
Wasser was born in Lausanne, Switzerland, on the Lake of Geneva. It is said that plants and nature were a passion for him as a child. From the age of sixteen to twenty, Wasser seriously pursued his passion, and obtained his Federal Diploma of Botany at age twenty and attended the Givaudan perfumery school. At twenty four, after a short apprenticeship, he was promoted to Junior Perfumer. Two years later, he was promoted to Perfumer and was sent to Givaudan in Paris. He stayed at Givaudan for six years working in fine fragrances.
He joined Fimenich in 1993 and spent nine years in New York before moving to the company offices in Paris in 2002. He collaborated with Annick Ménardo in numerous successful fragrances. Some of Wasser’s creations include: Addict by Christian Dior, Fuel for Life for Her by Diesel, Quand Vient La Pluie by Guerlain, Hypnose by Lancôme, Idlle by Guerlain, Aqua Allegoria: Flora Nymphea by Guerlain and Man Absolute by Jil Sander. It was Wasser’s creation of Iris Ganache and Quand Vient la Pluie for La Maison Guerlain that secured him a place in the company’s olfactory history.
Wasser’s appointment to exclusive perfumer for Guerlain, was announced by Laurent Boillot, Guerlain’s chief executive officer “This appointment upholds the Guerlain philosophy of entrusting its olfactory creations to a ‘nose,’ a tradition that has been followed for almost 180 years”.
As Guerlain’s perfumer, Wasser will be working with Sylvaine Delacourte, who has been with Guerlain since 1983 and was actively involved in many Guerlain perfumes, including L’Instant de Guerlain and Insolence. All who admire the creations from the house of Guerlain wait with bated breath to see exactly what effect Thierry Wasser will have on this historic family run business. Best of luck Thierry.
