a journey of the senses by FLACONNEUR

Not Just Another Cologne

Atelier Cologne was founded as a result of a chance encounter between two people of Italian descent, Sylvie Ganter and Christopher Cervasel. Cervasel was from Toulouse but living in Paris and Ganter was from Marseilles but living in New York. The common thread between the two perfume enthusiasts was their love for the classic eau de cologne format. This format was created about three hundred years ago by an Italian perfumer living in Cologne, Germany. It was usually comprised of citrus oil blends and herbal ingredients, which were a reminder of the creator’s Mediterranean homeland. This style of fragrance was a departure from the heavy perfumes of the time.

Atelier Cologne is one of the only fragrance houses dedicated strictly to the production of eau de cologne. Their signature concept is the “cologne absolute” inspired by the historic formulation of eau de cologne. These fragrances do not wear like you typical eau de cologne. Most colognes start with great openings then move to a moderately interesting group of heart notes. The heart notes fade all too quickly and usually, the base notes are not very memorable. Atelier Cologne fragrances wear like a good eau de parfum or a perfume extract. Longevity is great with these eaux de cologne that are produced with very high percentages of concentrated natural oils. The formulation uses Cologne Absolue percentages ranging from 12-20% in concentration. These higher concentrations cling to the skin and provide a very long lasting sillage from a product that traditionally didn’t last.

The Atelier Cologne line consists of the following fragrances. These scents are available in a range of products which include Cologne Absolue, Petite Cologne Absolue, candles and soaps:

Orange Sanguine – Blood orange, bitter orange, jasmine, geranium from South Africa, amber woods, tonka beans, sandalwood

Grand Néroli – Moroccan neroli, lemon, Sicilian bergamot, petitgrain, Persian galbanum, moss, birch leaves, clean musk, white amber, vanilla from Madagascar

Bois Blonds – Tunisian neroli, pink pepper, Moroccan orange flower, incense, light wood, musk, Haitian vetiver

Trèfle Pur – Bitter orange, cardamon, basil, clover absolute, violet leaves, Tunisian neroli, patchouli moss, musk

Oolang Infini – Bergamot, Tunisian neroli, oolang tea, jasmine petals, blond leather, tobacco flower, gaiac wood, Haitian vetiver

Vanille Insensée – Lime, cedrat, coriander, jasmine, vetiver, oak moss, Madagascar vanilla, oak wood, amber

There is a nice presentation of Atelier Cologne product. Each bottle is made from hand blown French glass in 200 ml in size. The leather cap on each bottle is handmade by craftsmen in Besançon, France. It is also worth mentioning that the bottles are not sealed, which allow for removal of the atomizer stem so it can used as a splash if so desired.

Atelier Cologne’s products can be purchased online at Lucky Scent, Neiman Marcus or Bergdorf Goodman.
