a journey of the senses by FLACONNEUR

London Rain_Jo Malone

It’s finally time to move away from our favorite warm and cozy fall and winter fragrances, and embrace the scent of flowers, and the one element that gives all plants life, rain. At last, spring is here, and what embodies the thought of spring more than the threat of rain, even a nice persistent London rain. The London Rain Collection from Jo Malone is probably one of the most interesting collection releases from this house in quite some time. Perfumer Christine Nagel has put together four captivating fragrances paying homage to swampy London pavements and the more glamorous dewy London gardens. All four fragrance stays true to Jo Malone’s concept of floral, citrus, woods and spice. There is something new and exciting about these recent offerings. The collections focus on the London Rain concept with wet and delicate florals, damp and resinous woods and drenched in conceptualism.

I had the chance to sample the Jo Malone London Rain Collection first hand while visiting my local Nordstrom. Interestingly enough, the Jo Malone representative informed me that there was one fragrance in particular that she was completely sold out of at the time, Rain & Angelica. Of course, that fact alone piqued my olfactory interest. Upon closer examination, I completely understood the popularity of Rain & Angelica. The dry down on this fragrance was eerily like the smell after a morning spring rain with floral angelica hints trimmed in green nuances. While Rain & Angelica seemed to be the favorite of some of this particular Nordstrom’s customer, it wasn’t mine. Between the four new fragrance offerings, I would have to say that Black Cedar Wood & Juniper was my favorite. First off, I’m a sucker for cumin, and when blended with moss and cedarwood, it’s irresistible. I have to give second place to Wisteria & Violet, which was very fresh, not ridiculously flowery and very hydrating. Thirdly, Rain & Angelica. While I am definitely a fan of Angelica root, I feel that the attempt at giving this fragrance a fresh green edge just fell short. Lime can be very fleeting and the vetiver is not strong enough to hold your attention. Last place is taken by White Jasmine & Mint. The jasmine is delicate and fresh but mint can sometime overpower, and does so here. I’m sure that the jasmine lovers will definitely consider White Jasmine & Mint purchase worthy.

“First off, I’m a sucker for cumin…” I’d no idea, Flac. That’s a rather exclusive little club, in case you weren’t aware.

Thanks for taking the time to write these up. This house is one of my go-to sources of quality scents for work. I’ll be checking it out, for sure. Thanks again!
