a journey of the senses by FLACONNEUR
In December 2010, Chandler Burr, the former New York Times perfume critic, left his position at the prestigious paper to curate an exhibition called “The Art of Scent: 1889-2011” at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City. The exhibition outlined some of the world’s great scent artists of the late 19th, 20th and early 21st centuries, Jean-Claude Ellena, Ernest Beaux and Jacques Cavalier just to name a few. Since that time, Burr has occupied the position of Curator of the Department of Olfactory Art at MAD. Burr is also an accomplished author or two books about perfume, “The Emperor of Scent: A True Story of Perfume, Obsession, and the Last Mystery of the Senses” released in 2003 and “The Perfect Scent: A Year Inside the Perfume Industry in Paris and New York” released in 2008.
In this TedxDanubia video from 2011, Burr discusses his concept of The Department of Olfactory Art at MAD and its relation to other sensory art forms. While the lecture is a few years old, there is some great background information and is well worth the watch.
